It's winning time in Cincinnati

The 2012 edition of the Cincinnati Bengals have kept fans on the edge of their seats all season. These Bengals have shown how great they can be, going on winning streaks of 3 and 4 games this season. However, they’ve also shown when they’re playing bad; they’re really bad losing to teams with losing records like Miami and Cleveland. They also struggled to move the ball on a Philadelphia Eagle team that has struggled defensively this season.

With that said the Bengals still have all of their goals in front of them. The message this Sunday is simple: Win and you’re in. If the Bengals win this Sunday, it will be the first time they have reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons in 30 years. This team made the playoffs last season and anything less this year would be a major disappointment.

The time to win is now. There isn’t a reason the Bengals shouldn’t win this game. They are healthier, younger and don’t have much pressure on them. The Steelers have the pressure on their shoulders. Most people expect them to win this game simply because of their track record. Former Super Bowl MVP Ben Roethlisberger has posted a 14-4 record against the Bengals since being drafted in 2004. He dominates the Bengals and should give them all they can handle on Sunday.
But, I still believe the Bengals can win this tough road contest. They have been playing like an AFC North team should: physical.

Running Back Benjarvus Green-Ellis has proved his worth by averaging 5 yards per carry (YPC) in December games. The Bengals are 2-1 in December and Green-Ellis only had 12 carries in their lone loss to Dallas. In their wins he is averaging 25 carries per game and I would expect the Bengals to feed him the ball another 20-plus times.

The defensive line has been lights out this season pressuring the quarterback. They have a chance to set the franchise record for sacks in a season, and need to continue to put pressure on Roethlisberger this week. Led by Geno Atkins and Domata Peko, the D-line needs to have a big impact on Sunday.

The Bengals might be considered young, but the time to win is now. Players and fans have paid their dues. Now it is time to change the fortune around in Cincinnati. Andy Dalton is 0-3 against the Steelers, it’s time for him to go into Pittsburgh and get a victory. A.J. Green has yet to have a 100-yard game against the Steelers and only had 6 catches in his best game against the black and gold.

It is time for these young guys to become men. No matter how many spectacular plays they make, it will be pointless if they can’t take the next step and beat the Steelers. It’s winning time in Cincinnati and what better way to clinch a playoff spot than to eliminate the Steelers out of contention on their home field?

A.J. Green (18) and Andy Dalton (14) were both Pro Bowlers in their
NFL Rookie campaigns, but they look to do something Sunday
that they've never done: beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ray Allen Shrugs Off Garnett, Scores 19 in Heat Win

It is no secret that Ray Allen is good at shooting from beyond-the-arc. In fact, he's made more three point shots than any other player in NBA history. The Miami Heat have dealt with guarding Allen for the past five seasons. But, they liked having Allen in a home jersey as one of their own as they faced the Boston Celtics.

Allen came into the game with two minutes left in the first-quarter. He greeted Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers and the rest of the Celtics bench, including old friend Kevin Garnett who didn't acknowledge Allen.

It would appear the snub motivated Allen as hit a three on the first possession with his new team. Garnett downplayed the fact that he ignored Allen after the game:

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen went on to score 19 points for the Heat, making 5 of 7 shots from the field. Allen proved he still had gas left in the tank, which benefits superstars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. “A Hall of Famer coming off the bench,” James said of Allen. “It’s a treat for us and just another example of the sacrifices that guys make to play here.”

The Heat won the game 120-107 and they looked every bit as dangerous as people speculated when they added Allen in the offseason.

Time will tell if the Miami Heat can win more than one ring, but they were the better team on Tuesday night and have upgraded their roster from last year's championship team. It is a long season, but the Heat started it off the way the last one ended: with a victory.

Saints S Roman Harper: "We'd be 5-0 if not for bounty scandal"

On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints improved to 2-4 on the season when they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-28 in a shootout. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees threw for four touchdowns and led his team to its second-straight victory, after starting the season with a 0-4 record. The Saints, who have struggled this season, would have a better record if not for "bountygate" according to starting Safety Roman Harper.

Harper was asked on NBC's Pro Football Talk “If you have none of this Bountygate in the offseason, if there's no problems, through five games, instead of 1-4, what's your best guess as to what your record would be?”

Harper's response: "5-0."

“Hey, it is what it is,” Harper continued when Kuselias suggested that the league punishment cost the Saints four losses. "It's all right. You know, you can't win ‘em all. And at the end of the day we have to climb out of it from here. And we still have a chance in this division -- that's the crazy thing. No matter how we started the season. I think the last two Super Bowl champs limped into the playoffs at 9-7. All you can ask for is a chance and an opportunity late in January and that's all we ask for."

It is quite interesting to see a locker room leader admit how much "bountygate" has affected the team. Most people believed the Saints would contend even though Head Coach Sean Payton is suspended for the season. They do appear to be righting the ship, but would they have a 5-0 record with Payton? It's tough to say, but unless your head coach can come in and play defense, I highly doubt they would have an unblemished record.

Cincinnati Bengals Vs Atlanta Falcons Preview

The Cincinnati Bengals started out the preseason with a solid performance against the New York Jets, which led to a 17-6 victory. Now, six days later, the Bengals face a bigger test when they go on the road to take on the Atlanta Falcons.

Injuries on Offense:

The team came away injured from their first game and will be without key players including running backs Benjarvus Green-Ellis and Bernard Scott.  This opens up the door for players like Cedric Peerman and Aaron Brown to get some carries and show the coaching staff what they can do. The offense will also be without Guard Travelle Wharton who is out for the rest of the season. Second-year player Clint Boling will get a chance to start. After a summer of strength and balance training Boling has an opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL. Coaches say he has made strides and with the departure of Bobbie Williams, Boling seems to be the best option at Left Guard following the Wharton injury.

Can Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Jordan Shipley
show the Bengals staff he is the same player
he was prior to tearing his ACL?

Injuries on Defense:

The Bengals are entering Game 2 of the preseason without four of their cornerbacks. Dre Kirkpatrick, Jason Allen, Brandon Ghee and Shaun Prater are all out for tonight's game against Atlanta. Adam Jones has also been battling a calf injury and the team has not said whether he will play or not. The team is also without starting middle linebacker Rey Maualuga who was injured last week against the Jets. Defensive End Carlos Dunlap sprained his right knee during the Jets game and is out for the preseason and doubtful for the regular season opener against Baltimore. Robert Geathers is also out for the preseason which will give newcomer Jamaal Anderson a chance to make an impact.

Questions I want answers to:

1. How will the wounded secondary handle the wide receiver tandem of Roddy White and Julio Jones?

2. Can Clint Boling show that he has improved and is a starting guard in the NFL?

3. Will MLB Vontaze Burfict continue to play well and cement a spot on the team?

4. Can Jordan Shipley show the explosiveness he had before he tore his ACL last season?

5. What will Brandon Tate and Armon Binns do to prove they deserve the 2nd wide receiver slot?

At the end of the day this is simply preseason game number two. The Bengals have injuries all over the field and the goal is to be as healthy as possible for opening night against the Baltimore Ravens. However, tonight's game will go a long way in answering some of the questions fans have about the Bengals. The game starts at 8:00pm on Fox.

Why not Owens?

When New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie said he was the "second-best wide receiver" on the Jets team, most questioned if he was right or not. However, the fact that people are asking that question shows how weak the Jets are at wide receiver. Their current depth chart has four receivers that have never caught an NFL pass. The "number-one" receiver Santonio Holmes has only had one 1,000 yard season in his career and would be a second option on most teams.

Terrell Owens keeps himself in tremendous
shape and could bring experience to a
team like the New York Jets.

With that being said, the Jets are weak at the wide-receiver position. One free-agent wide receiver that could fit in with the Jets is Terrell Owens. Before you yell at your computer screen, please give this idea more thought. The Jets wide receivers have 449 receptions for 6,573 receiving yards as a position group. Owens has over 1,000 catches in his career for 15,934 yards. Bringing in a player of his stature would not only sell tickets, but it would lead to more wins. There is no doubt in my mind that Owens could be a top 25 wide receiver in the NFL this season. He is desperate to join a team and would come at a very cheap price.

The controversial wide receiver would be able to show young players like Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley the work that goes into being one of the best. Owens may not mentor the players, but working hard is something Owens has done his entire career and that would continue. Holmes would be able to play with a consistent threat on the opposite side of him.

Football wise it makes complete sense. However, it remains to be seen if any NFL team will take a flier on the veteran wide receiver. One thing is certain, the New York Jets will have plenty of controversy whether they add Terrell Owens or not.

Could Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets
benefit by adding Terrell Owens?
YES!

National Writer Predicts 16-0

Twitter: @James_Rapien

Most national sports-writers make picks for the NFL season, but when Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com predicted that the New England Patriots would go 16-0 many people were dumbfounded. Media members referred to Prisco as "insane," while others didn't take him seriously. Prisco followed it up by saying the Patriots would lose in the Super Bowl to finish 18-1.

"As you rip the idea of an undefeated season, I dare you do find a loss on the New England Patriots' schedule as of right now.Pick one. I couldn't. I have the Patriots rolling to a second undefeated regular season in the past five years.Of course, it's probably not going to happen. But that's what made this so much fun to do.I had no idea the Pats would be 16-0 until I tallied up the records after inputting all the scores."

If this seems like deja-vu, it's because it is. The Pats also finished 18-1 in 2007. To repeat that feat and win 18 straight games just to lose in the Super Bowl would be devastating, but that isn't the question that should be asked here. Is it possible for the New England Patriots to finish 16-0 in the regular season and advance to the Super Bowl?

In 2007, they added a downfield threat and future Hall-of-Fame receiver with Randy Moss and reception machine Wes Welker. Pair that with Tom Brady and this team had tons of firepower. Can the 2012 Patriots replicate it?

First, the Patriots added the down field threat they were missing last season with Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd thrived under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels system when he was the head coach in Denver and that was without a quarterback like Brady. He is familiar with the offense and could be the Moss-like threat the Patriots had in 2007.

The Patriots defense had veterans on their team in 2007 and in 2012 they will have defensive anchors like Vince Wilfork and Jerrod Mayo. However, they added an abundance of young defensive talent in the draft with players like Chandler Jones and Donta Hightower. Both will compete for starting positions this season.

It seems silly to predict that a team will go undefeated, especially because it is so rare in the NFL. But, with the additions of Lloyd, Jones, and Hightower, the Patriots will be more dangerous than ever. Don't forget they have the best tight end combination in the league with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. There is so much talent on offense, that if the rookies can contribute on defense, the New England Patriots could go undefeated. Don't forget the Patriots do have one of the weakest schedules in 2012.  One thing is certain, the Patriots will be favored in every regular season game this season.

Pete Prisco can't control whether or not New England finishes with undefeated record, but one thing is certain, they will be contenders once again in 2012.

Can the New England Patriots go undefeated in 2012? It is possible
with an abundance of talent and a weak schedule.

NFL Network Analyst: Dolphins Should Sign T.O.

It is no secret the Miami Dolphins are lacking reliable wide receivers heading into training camp.Everyone also knows wide receiver Terrell Owens is looking for a job after being unemployed last season.

NFL Network Analyst Jamie Dukes says the Dolphins should sign the 38 year-old veteran wide receiver.

"The guy [Miami] needs to bring in -- I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it -- is Terrell Owens,” Dukes said Friday on the NFL Network. “Terrell Owens, I believe if healthy, is a top-25 receiver. He had a great year in Cincinnati and Chad [Johnson] and T.O. have worked together before in Cincinnati."
People will think it is a joke when they hear Dukes suggesting the Dolphins sign Owens, however I am not laughing. Owens is a proven NFL player and a future Hall-of-Famer. Just a few seasons ago Owens and Johnson played well together, but I do not think this team will go after T.O.

The Miami Dolphins are a young team who need to see what they have in their young pass catchers. T.O. does have a place in the league. I think he would fit well with the Carolina Panthers. Owens wouldn't be able to bully second-year quarterback Cam Newton and this would give the Panthers two legitimate wide receivers by pairing Owens with Steve Smith.

There are a few other teams that Owens could work well with, but I don't want to speculate too much. Overall, T.O. does have top 25 ability like Jamie Dukes said, but the Miami Dolphins do not seem like the place for him.

The Johnson-Owens duo played well together in 2010, but Miami fans shouldn't
hold their breath on a Batman and Robin reunion this season.

Chad Johnson Vows to be His "Normal" Self

Chad Johnson is done taking all of the blame for the way things went in his one season with the New England Patriots. Johnson vowed to be his old self, explaining his plans for this season.
"I'm going back to my normal ways," Johnson told the newspaper after a photo shoot for Zico Coconut Water. "My normal ways, when I was at my best, when I got fined, look at the production those years. Usually things don't go right when you try to change the way you do things. I'm back to normal. My personality was controlled last year. You didn't hear me at all last year. Zero. Zilch. When my mouth is running, it forces me to perform. It's never been vindictive. I never got anybody in trouble. ... When I can be me, I am loose. Everything just flows for me, whether it's the style of play, the way I learn."
Chad Johnson has been one of the most entertaining players of the past decade, so last July when he was traded to the New England Patriots, most people thought he would become a favorite target of future hall-of-fame quarterback Tom Brady.

Johnson never got on the same page with the Patriots and struggled the entire season. His 16 receptions for 276 yards and 1 TD were all career lows. He was released from the Patriots in June and within a few days, became a member of his hometown Miami Dolphins.

The wide receiver formerly known as 'Ochocinco' says that this season will be different from day one of training camp.
“This season is going to be a monster year. I don’t care who’s playing quarterback. I’m going to have a great year,” Johnson said. “The first day I get to camp, everybody’s mouth can drop [the bleep] open. My game is at the point where it doesn’t matter who starts at quarterback. Oprah can play quarterback and we’ll be all right.”
Hopefully, Johnson can recapture his old form and give the Dolphins a threat on the outside to replace wide receiver Brandon Marshall who they traded in the offseason.

Chad Johnson vows to regain his old form and prove his doubters wrong
this season as a member of his hometown Miami Dolphins.

Cincinnati Bengals First-Round Pick Injures Knee

When thinking about a young team that is coming off of a playoff season last year, Cincinnati Bengal fans have plenty of reasons to be excited. The Bengals start training camp tomorrow and although Bengal nation is still very optimistic for this upcoming season, they were knocked down a peg or two when news broke late Tuesday night that first-round draft pick Dre Kirkpatrick fractured a bone in his knee and will be out for training camp in its entirety. Dan Hanzus of NFl.com writes:

"Kirkpatrick injured the knee while preparing for training camp, creating a situation where the Bengals could potentially withhold pay from the former Alabama standout. He will fail the team's physical and land on the physically unable to perform list."

The odds of Kirkpatrick having a big impact on the field this season weren't great anyway. Now, Kirkpatrick could find himself starting the season on the PUP list with fellow defensive back Leon Hall. Kirkpatrick is weak in coverage and would needs to develop before becoming a starter for the Bengals. However, starting his career off with an injury and not being able to start his on-field development definitely hurts any progress coaches had planned for him during training camp.

The Bengals will look to third-year player Brandon Ghee and veterans like Adam "Pacman" Jones to play a major role this season. Their star defensive back Leon Hall is expected to start the season on PUP list for the first six weeks while recovering from an Achilles injury suffered last season.

NBA Offseason Winners and Losers

The last time I posted on here it was a celebration of the Miami Heat winning their second NBA Title and the coronation of King James. Now, just a few weeks later, the journey for a second-straight championship begins for the Heat, while the rest of the NBA works to become the next world champ. The draft and free agency have been very entertaining and I felt the need to recap some of the biggest moves this offseason so far. Here are the winners and losers:

Winners:

1. Brooklyn Nets: Deron Williams and Joe Johnson bring some stability to the Brooklyn Nets. This will be one of the better back-courts in the league and the Nets should become a playoff team in their first season in Brooklyn. They could get even better if they can pull off a trade for Dwight Howard. If not, Brook Lopez and Gerald Wallace are solid third and fourth options, respectfully. No team has improved more in free agency than the Nets with the acquisition of All-Star Joe Johnson and by retaining Deron Williams.

Deron Williams looks to lead the new Brooklyn Nets
to the playoffs in 2013.

2. Los Angeles Lakers: It seemed as though Steve Nash was headed to the Toronto Raptors. They offered him more money than anyone else, and were hoping to make him the face of their franchise for the next few years. If he wasn't heading to the Raptors, he was going to New York where he could rejoin Amare Stoudemire and try to make the Knicks a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference. But, the 38 year-old veteran decided something no one expected. He joined the Los Angeles Lakers and will pair up with Kobe Bryant to give the Lakers a Hall of Fame back-court. Nash will have a big impact and instantly turns the Lakers into a contender who are also in the market for Dwight Howard.

Steve Nash (left) and Kobe Bryant (right) will join forces in purple and
gold after having some classic battles in the playoffs over the years.
3. Boston Celtics- The Celtics were only one game from the NBA Finals in 2012 and it's no secret they're on a mission to beat the Miami Heat and return to the NBA Finals. They are well on their way to doing that with their offseason additions. They had a great draft by selecting Ohio State Forward Jared Sullinger and Syracuse Center Fab Melo. Both players add length to the front-court and can learn from future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Garnett. Garnett was a free agent until he signed a 3-year deal with hopes of one more title run. The Celtics also resigned Brandon Bass and are in the process of agreeing to terms with Jeff Green. However, adding veteran shooting guard Jason Terry may be the best move of all. He is a spark plug off of the bench and shows up in the clutch. If Ray Allen re-joins this already deep team, the sky is the limit for the aging, yet deep Boston Celtics.

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett would like nothing more than
to win a second NBA Championship.

Losers

1. Dallas Mavericks- The Mavericks were hoping to land a superstar this offseason and instead they've lost some of their own. They missed out on Deron Williams and that led to Jason Terry departing to Boston. Steve Nash  decided to go to Los Angeles instead of reuniting with the Mavs. It'll be interesting to see what Mark Cuban and the Mavericks do, but they are just a year removed from a championship and now they are in danger of missing the playoffs.

2. Orlando Magic- The Magic are stuck with the players they have because free agents do not want to play for the Magic until the Dwight Howard situation gets resolved. Howard is holding that franchise hostage..... literally.

The sooner Dwight Howard is in a different
jersey the better for the Orlando Magic
organization and their fans.

3. Houston Rockets- The Rockets had dreams of acquiring a star (maybe 2) and becoming instant contenders. Instead, they are left without a point guard and are likely going to miss out on the one they have signed to a contract. The Knicks have said they would match any offer for restricted free agent Jeremy Lin. The Rockets have also agreed to terms with Center Omer Asik, but the Bulls will have three days to match the offer starting on July 11th.  The $25 million deal seems a bit much for Asik if you ask me.

Houston entered free agency with two point guards, but after trading
Kyle Lowry and free agent Goran Dragic signing with Phoenix,
the Rockets are left hoping the Knicks do not match
their offer for Jeremy Lin.

Heat Showing How Bad They Want it

The Miami Heat entered the 2012 NBA Finals as the underdog. They were told their team was incomplete, their stars wouldn't be enough and their role players simply weren't good enough to win a championship. Lebron James wasn't clutch enough, Chris Bosh wasn't tough enough and Dwyane Wade couldn't have the same impact that he has had in the past. This team had expectations to win multiple titles, but most believed that the Oklahoma City Thunder would become NBA Champions after the Finals were set. There’s just one problem with that prediction, the Miami Heat weren’t going to lose in back to back NBA Finals.

The Heat have won with a variety of ways in these playoffs, but it has come down to pure will in this series against the Thunder. The Heat have won three straight games that have came down to the final minute. They have played like a team and not just a Big 3. Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers and even rookie Norris Cole have stepped up in key moments for the Heat.

That is the difference this season. Miami is a complete team. They thought they could’ve played better as a team in last year’s Finals, but Chris Bosh and the rest of the Heat are going to make sure they leave it all out on the floor this time.  “That’s what the Finals is about, giving everything you have until you can’t walk no more,” said Bosh following the Game 4 victory. “It’s about will. It’s about nothing else. . . . We know it’s not over until it’s over, so we have to finish this job that we started.”

This Heat team is focused on one goal and after two years of scrutiny find themselves just one win away from reaching the pinnacle of the basketball world. That is something that many people, including myself did not think would happen when the Finals began.

Dwyane Wade let's everyone know how many games the
Miami Heat need to complete their journey
and win a Championship.

NBA Finals Prediction

Well, for the second year in a row Lebron James and the Miami Heat find themselves just four games away from an NBA Championship. The road has undoubtedly been hard for the Heat, who escaped the Boston Celtics in Game 7 on Saturday night. They’ve overcome an injury to All-Star power forward Chris Bosh, who is looking healthy and will need to be a major contributor for the Heat if they plan on winning a championship. But, will their struggles lead to an end of season triumph?

The Miami Heat are lacking quality players at the forward and center position. They have two Superstars in Lebron James and Dwyane Wade. The problem is they need other guys to continue to step up against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Not only do the Thunder have stars, but they have depth the Heat are lacking. Kevin Durant is a three-time scoring champion and one of the best players in the game today (if not the best). The Thunder have a very athletic guard in Russell Westbrook and the best 6th Man of the Year James Harden. The Thunder are bigger and better in the paint with high flying Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins.

The pressure is on Lebron James to win an NBA Title and quiet his critics, but in order for him to do that I think he would need to contain Durant on defense and average 35 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists. That is too much for any superstar to do because Kevin Durant is that good and so are the young Oklahoma City Thunder. James will have a good Finals and so will Wade, but it won’t be enough.

I’ll take the Oklahoma City Thunder in 6 Games.

Game 1: Oklahoma City: 109   Miami: 100
Game 2: Oklahoma City: 91   Miami: 84
Game 3: Miami: 112 Oklahoma City: 89
Game 4: Miami: 103 Oklahoma City: 98
Game 5: Oklahoma City: 97   Miami: 89
Game 6: Oklahoma City: 92   Miami: 81

Solomon Tentman: Determined to Fulfill a Dream

Tentman looks to play a major role for the Bearcats'
this season just two years after being told
he may never play again.

On August 21, 2010 the University of Cincinnati football team was having its last major scrimmage at Camp Higher Ground in West Harrison, Indiana, before coming back to Cincinnati. The Bearcats were coming off of their best season in school history and it became clear that the football program was finally relevant. It was a sunny day, perfect for football. But, this day would change the journey of one Bearcat forever. As the scrimmage was coming to a close, Freshman Linebacker Solomon Tentman turned awkwardly on his left leg during a play.

In a matter of seconds, Tentman, who had been one of the top ranked high school linebackers in the country the previous year, was writhing in pain holding his knee.

“One of the doctors and J.K. (Schaffer) carried me off of the field,” said Tentman. “I couldn’t even lay my leg straight. On a scale of 1-10 it [the pain] was a 20.”

The former three star recruit was told he had a torn ACL, LCL, MCL, PCL and partially torn patella tendon. For most athletes, an injury like this is career-ending. Every major ligament in his knee was damaged. The doctors were honest when they said his football playing days were most likely over. Six days later Tentman had surgery to repair his destroyed knee.

“The night after surgery was probably the worst night of my life. The nerve block only lasted about six hours, when it was supposed to last 24. I was in pain all night,” he said.

In just a few seconds, a game he had played since middle school was taken from him. However, the linebacker was determined to show everyone his love-affair with football only hit a speed bump and not a permanent road block.

When asked about his family’s reaction to the injury, Tentman admitted that he had to console them saying, “They were a little worried. I told them I would be fine and that I wasn’t giving up; that [giving up] wasn’t in my fiber. I knew I was going to play again.”

If Tentman was going to recover, he learned early on it would be a tough battle not just physically, but mentally as well. The rehabilitation process for a severe injury like his would be long and strenuous. That meant early morning workouts that consisted mostly of weights, agility drills, and mobility exercises. After each workout, Tentman would have to ice his knee or it would swell.

“I wouldn’t say the rehab was the hardest thing I’ve done. The mental aspect was the toughest part,” said Tentman. "Anyone can physically do the rehab, but getting the right mind set to do the rehab was the hard part.” The mental toll from an injury like this would be hard for anyone to deal with, and here was Tentman, facing it early in his college football career.

As the days, weeks and months passed, Tentman’s condition improved enough that the doctor said his career was not over and that he would be able to take the field after his knee healed. He worked hard to regain his old form, but with most severe injuries, time plays a major role in the healing process. Even though the process was long and grueling, Tentman didn't show any signs of giving up.

“As long as you keep working harder and harder and harder, then everything will come with it," he said. "It has been a gradual process and I just learned to accept it.”

Tentman had three or four sessions of rehab each day. Each session lasted at least two hours. He quickly realized that the exercise bike and bosu ball would be important in his recovery. The bosu ball was used strengthen the muscles around his knee so he could stay balanced and stable, not only on the football field but in everyday activities. Tentman admits one of the hardest things in rehab was not lifting weights or running; it was simply straightening his knee.

“They would extend and bend my knee forcefully so they could remove the scar tissue and regain full range of motion; which was one of the most painful parts," he said.

After he regained full motion in his knee, the strength training began. Tentman did numerous exercises to regain the power he once had in his legs including: leg press, reverse hyper lifts, and reverse dead lifts. Once he made it to this stage, it was a matter of gaining the lift and power he once had. This took time, but after he passed an exam given by the doctor he was cleared for agility and running drills. Eventually, Tentman was able to begin conditioning with the team and the hours of rehab and hard work he put in were paying off.

The injury took place 21 months ago and Tentman surprised a lot of people with his recovery. He was able to travel with the team and play in five games last season, but even he acknowledged he wasn’t 100% healthy. He was still walking and running with a slight limp. Even though he didn’t get much playing time last season, Tentman knew he had to be patient since he hadn’t fully recovered from the devastating injury. When asked about being completely recovered now, Tentman didn’t hesitate: “Yeah, definitely. With summer running and conditioning I feel 100% and I’m ready to go.”

His health is important for the Bearcats because senior J.K. Schaffer graduated and there is an opening at middle linebacker. Now fully healthy, Tentman looks to capture more playing time and help fill a need for his team. Schaffer wasimpressed with Tentman and undoubtedly believes in him: “I consider Solly a brother, and I am pretty confident that he feels the same way about me. I have spent countless hours in the weight room, locker room, film room, and field with Solly, and I know that he is going to be successful. The way he fought through his rehabilitation and his injury shows the toughness that Solly has, and also his persistence. Solly is a guy that I would go to war with any day.”

Complements on work ethic and determination have become a common trend when talking to peers and coaches about Tentman. People who know him seem to understand the potential Tentman has and how hard he had to work just to get healthy after that devastating injury.

"Not very many people are able to come back from that," University of Cincinnati Football Head Coach Butch Jones recently told Paul Dehner of GoBearcats.com. "Not only from the severity of the damage to the knee, but also the mental toughness, the mental conditioning that it takes to rehab yourself back to being football conditioned."

Tentman’s love for football started in Clifton in elementary school at Annunciation on Clifton Avenue. “My passion for the game started in the 2nd grade when we played two-hand touch on the playground,” he said. “I didn’t play organized football until the 5th grade.”

Tentman realized in the 8th grade that he had the tools to play at the next level. He attended Roger Bacon High School in St. Bernard where he was the Greater Catholic League Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2009-2010. He tallied 179.5 tackles and 14 sacks during his senior campaign.

Although it may not sound like it, Solomon Tentman does have hobbies other than football. In his free time he enjoys cooking and playing video games. Steak is his favorite food to cook, but also enjoys preparing bacon and eggs. His favorite videogames include Call of Duty and NCAA Football. His football confidence extends to the virtual gridiron where Tentman claims, “I can use any team on the game and beat anybody with anyone [team].”

Tentman’s goal was to always earn a Division 1 college scholarship. “It became a reality my sophomore year [of high school] when I was getting interest from all over," he said.

He was recruited by numerous schools including Akron, Purdue, Minnesota, and Michigan. “I chose UC because I watched them when I was growing up,” said Tentman. “That was back when there was only a couple of thousand [fans] showing up to the games. It's home.”

He admits that getting more playing time this year is on his mind and didn’t shy away when asked about the possibility of becoming the starting middle linebacker for the Bearcats next season. “That’s definitely a goal of mine. I’m just trying to be more aggressive on the field and trying to become the playmaker that J.K. Schaffer was.”

This upcoming season looks to be Tentman’s first full year of college football. All of the pain he went through with his injury and the hard work he put in to make a return to the game he loves is astounding. All of the grueling workouts, rehabilitation and hardships he has faced in the last 21 months have come to an end and he will be able to resume playing football at full strength. There’s an old saying, you never know what you got until it’s gone. For Tentman, football was gone, but he didn’t take no for an answer and worked his tail off to return to the game he loves. Does Tentman look at football any differently now after his injury?
“I approach football with a no remorse attitude," he said. "There are certain times when I have fun, but I approach it very seriously because you never know when it's going to be over.”

Tentman has shown his family, teammates and fans that he is willing to do everything possible to be out on that field. The hard work he has put in to defy the odds is living proof that hard work and dedication can get you where you want to go in life. However, Tentman still has one thing left to do to complete his comeback: play in front of his hometown crowd.

“One moment I can’t wait for is September 6th vs. Pittsburgh on ESPN in a sold-out and blacked-out Nippert Stadium,” Tentman said thinking of a packed house for the Bearcats 2012-2013 season opener. After everything he has went through, no one can doubt his will to succeed.

Sports Talk Rundown- NBA Playoffs Edition

Everything seemed to be going against the Boston Celtics on Monday night. They arrived in Miami a day after defeating a pesky Philadelphia 76ers team in Game 7 on Saturday nighy. That meant little rest for the veteran Celtics. They had four technical fouls called against them and Kevin Garnett looked like the only played who came ready to play for the veteran ball club. Plus, they were on the road playing against two of the top five basketball players in the world. I picked the Miami Heat to win this series in 7 games, with Chris Bosh returning in Game 5. After Monday night, my opinion hasn't changed at all. The Celtics will get their feet under themselves and even up the series 1-1 on Wednesday night. It will be close, but I'll take the Celtics to defeat the Heat 89-84 in Game 2. They will get more physical with the Heat and play more zone defense. That will help against the fast-paced Miami offense.

Lebron James (left) and the Miami Heat ran passed the fatigued Boston Celtics
in Game 1. I expect Game 2 to have a much different result.

The San Antonio Spurs rallied at the end of Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals to defeat the Oklahoma City  Thunder and take a 1-0 series lead on Sunday night. They play again tonight, but I am expecting the same result. The Spurs are a well-oiled machine. They do not have any noticeable weaknesses and everyone has a team first mentality. The Spurs always have a guy who steps up for them. Manu Ginobili did it in Game 1. Tony Parker will do it in Game 2 and the Spurs will win 98-89.

I'm guessing the Spurs will play well against
the Thunder from start to finish in Game 2
and come away with a 2-0 series lead.

The Answer Needs a Chance

Five years ago if you would've told me that Allen Iverson was on a basketball court in the NBA Playoffs, I would've thought he'd be starting for his team and playing a key role in his team's success. Unfortunately, that was not the case on Wednesday night. In fact, who would've thought the 36 year old Iverson would be in a Number 23 Philadelphia 76ers jersey and jeans presenting the game ball for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Iverson didn't appear much different, but everyone knew he was. The former league MVP had fallen off of a cliff and now he was presenting the game ball on the court he had so many great moments on.

In the 2007-2008 season Allen Iverson started all 82 games for the Denver Nuggets. He averaged just over 26 points per game and there were no signs of his basketball skills declining. Iverson showed he could complement another star when he played with Carmelo Anthony, but they never made a deep playoff run together and this led to him being traded. After being traded, Iverson began to fall off of the cliff mentioned earlier. His stats declined and he just didn't seem like the same player.

Personal problems eventually took Iverson out of the league and A.I. was left trying to get his life back together. But, I do not want to feel sorry for the former scoring champion. I know he put himself in those positions and he only has himself to blame for the mistakes he made throughout his life.

The last time Iverson was on an NBA basketball court he was dealing with demons that he had to get rid of. His daughter was dealing with illness and his marriage was on shaky ground.  While dealing with those issues, Iverson managed to average 13.7 ppg in his last 28 NBA games. Half of NBA players probably wish they could average 14 points every night and Iverson did at his worst moment. But, after playing only 3 games in 2010, Iverson's issues became toomuch and he left the NBA.

Since then, Iverson has said he would like to play again, but not many teams (if any) have reached out to him. A.I. was interviewed during the game on Wednesday Night and when asked to comment on retirement he said, "I'm not using that word." Later, he was asked about a potential NBA return, "I mean, the way it is right now, I've accepted the fact that [playing in the NBA] might not happen," he said. "But I still want to play basketball. If I can get an opportunity to where it's going to make me happy at the end of my career, I'll take that opportunity. But I just love to play and I want to have another opportunity to play on the professional level."

Allen Iverson will be 37 years old in two weeks, but why shouldn't he get one last shot to play the game he loves? Last time we saw him, he still had the talent to play at a high level. Regardless of how these NBA playoffs turnout, I hope A.I. is on an NBA court next season because he deserves one last chance. It was clear during his career that he played every game like his last and if he wants to get back on the court I believe he will be more motivated than ever.

Lakers Must Improve to Keep Kobe Bryant

This was something most analysts predicted and fans expected, but it seemed surreal when it happened. "The torch has been passed," TNT Analyst Reggie Miller said, and many would tend to agree with him. That implies Los Angeles Lakers run with Kobe Bryant was over and the Oklahoma City Thunder are the top dogs in the Western Conference. The game had a movie-like feel to it. Kobe goes off one last time, not only on the Oklahoma City Thunder, but on father time himself. His 16 seasons in the NBA have taken their toll, but he wanted to try an lead his team to a Game 5 win to put off the inevitable. Bryant has led the Lakers into many battles before and he led them again on Monday night. He put the Lakers on his back, but the young Thunder were too much and the future hall of famer couldn’t do it alone.

Now, media all across the country is speculating what the future holds for the Los Angeles Lakers. Should they blow up the team and start fresh or should they try to add a piece or two to help return to the promised land? I believe if the Lakers do not improve in the offseason with trades and/or free agents, that Kobe Bryant will demand a trade. He wants to be the best and still has enough in the tank to lead a team. Bryant just wants to win championships. He understands the clock is ticking on his career and if that means going to play somewhere else to make one or two more title runs, I believe he is willing to do so.

During the game it became obvious that Bryant was frustrated with his teammates. He yelled at them, tried to motivate them, but nothing worked. The Black Mamba was playing with two 7-footers who lacked the aggressiveness and killer instinct that Bryant posseses. Kobe plays with more drive and will to win then any other player in the league today, a skill that his teammates lack . If that doesn’t change in soon, expect Kobe Bryant to be in a different uniform by the start of next season.

making the Western Conference Finals

The Show Rundown

Catch me live on www.bearcastradio.com from 12-2pm today and every Tuesday. Here are a few of the many topics that will be covered today.

One of the biggest storylines of the NBA Playoffs has been the seasoned Lakers going up against the young Thunder. Some people thought the Lakers would be able to make one last run, but last night I don't believe there's any chance the Lakers WIN this series. They will take one, maybe two games but that is it. The Thunder are too talened and young for this veteran Lake-Show.

After getting blown out in Game One, Kobe Bryant and
the Lakers don't seem to have many answers for
Kevin Durant and the young Thunder.

Can the Miami Heat still win the NBA Championship this season without Chris Bosh?

My answer to this question is no. Lebron and Wade cannot carry the team alone. Without a post prescence it will be very tough to win a title when they will have to face Boston and Oklahoma City or San Antonio. I thought OKC would probably win a 7 game series against the Heat with Bosh. If he's gone, they don't have a chance. I predict that the Boston Celtics will knock the Heat ff before they even reach the Finals if Bosh is out and the Celtics are healthy.

Joey Votto led the Reds past the Nationals on Sunday with THREE Home Runs and a Walkoff Grand Slam. They also defeated the Braves last night 3-1. That makes two wins in a row, but the questions remains: Is this Reds team back on track? Find out my opinion at 12:00pm.

The Show Rundown

Live radio show today at 12:00pm on bearcastradio.com. Here are some of today's topics:

Carmelo Anthony's Knicks got the best of Lebron James and
the Miami Heat on Sunday. Can they do it again?

Lebron James had 6 points in the final minutes of the game on Sunday and yet people still criticize him when the Heat lose. Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 41 points and yet the Heat continued to let Shane Battier guard him down the stretch. This was the difference in Game 4 and there's no doubt Erik Spolestra will have James guarding Anthony in the fourth quarter of Game 5.

We'll also talk about the rest of the NBA Playoffs including the four games taking place tonight. All four series could end as the Los Angeles Lakers face the Denver Nuggets (LA lead 3-1), the Indiana Pacers face the Orlando Magic (Indy leads 3-1), the Hawks face the Boston Celtics (Bos leads 3-1) and the Chicago Bull face the Philadelphia 76ers (Philly leads 3-1).

Cole Hamels said he meant to hit Bryce Harper. Find out
my thoughts on the matter and if it is
good or bad for baseball.

It's also time to give the Cincinnati Reds a little love because it looks like they are starting to hit their stride posting a 10-5 record in their last 15 games. They are in second place with an overall record of 15-13. They trail the NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals by 2.5 games.

NBA Series-by-Series Breakdown

(1) Chicago Bulls vs. (8) Philadelphia 76ers:

The top-seeded Bulls come in with quite a resume. They won 50 games in a shortened NBA season and beat out the Miami Heat for the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. What is even more astounding is the fact the Bulls played a significant part of the season without their Superstar Derek Rose. Rose seems to be as healthy as he has been all season and that is bad news for the Philadelphia 76ers who lose this series in 5 games.

The Chicago Bulls defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 4-1

(2) Miami Heat vs. (7) New York Knicks:

These teams look to rekindle their rivalry and will do that without a doubt. This is, by far the most interesting series in the first round. The Knicks have the potential to beat the Heat, but will they put it all together? New York puts pressure on its team, but Miami has pressure from the whole country. Lebron James is the best player on either team and that is why I am picking the Heat in 7 games.

The Miami Heat defeat the New York Knicks 4-3.

*NOTE* Some videos from the Heat-Knicks rivalry of the 90's are shown below.

(3) Indiana Pacers vs. (6) Orlando Magic

This series is between two teams heading in the opposite directions. The young, upstart Indiana Pacers who play so well together are going up against a team whose best player let them down all season and ended it by getting hurt before the playoffs started. Dwight Howard isn't playing for Orlando in this series and since I don't want to dedicate this post to him, I just want to say the Magic are in trouble. They are playing an Indiana team who has all the pieces necessary to make noise in the playoffs this season: inside scoring and rebounding, very good defense and shooters on the outside. They will do just that by beating the Howard-less Magic in 5 games.

The Indiana Pacers defeat the Orlando Magic 4-1.

(4) Atlanta Hawks vs. (5) Boston Celtics

This Atlanta Hawks team always seems to get a bad matchup in the first round. They just aren't good enough to compete with the big time playoff teams. With that being said, do the Celtics have enough in the tank for one more championship run? I am not totally sold on them, but Rajon Rondo is the best player on either team and the Hawks are without Forward Al Horford. Boston takes this series in 6 games.

The Boston Celtics defeat the Atlanta Hawks 4-2.

(1) San Antonio Spurs vs. (8) Utah Jazz

This is the typical 1 versus 8 matchup we are all accustomed to. The Utah Jazz played their way into the playoffs and that's great for them and for the City of Utah. Hopefully someone has told them that their dream is about to come to an end. The too often referred to as "old" Spurs looked poised and ready to make a run at the title. They will get through the first round without much resistance and knock of the Jazz in 5 games.

The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Utah Jazz 4-1.

(2) Oklahoma City Thunder vs. (7) Dallas Mavericks:

The Thunder are coming off of a breakout regular season. However, they stumbled at the end of it and gave up their grip on the top seed in the Western Conference. That was a critical mistake because now they are facing the Mavericks who knocked them off last year en route to their first NBA Championship. Dallas is a team that struggled throughout the season and excluding last year, they have been eliminated from the playoffs early. They will get back to their old ways, but not without a fight. The Thunder take this series in 7 games.

The Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Dallas Mavericks 4-3.

(3) Los Angeles Lakers vs. (6) Denver Nuggets

The Lakers come into this series as an NBA Finals darkhorse. But, can any team from Los Angeles be considered a darkhorse? They have two seven-footers that must do their job for their team to make a run. The Denver Nuggets are a solid team; however, they do not have a star. The NBA is a star driven league and when there is two minutes left, the Lakers have a guy who can deliver with Kobe Bryant. The Nuggets are missing that guy and that is going to keep them from advancing. Los Angeles takes the series in 6 games.

The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Denver Nuggets 4-2.

(4) Memphis Grizzlies vs. (5) Los Angeles Clippers

This series is a toss-up in my mind. Memphis played very well in last year's playoffs, but can they duplicate that performace? Los Angeles hasn't been to the playoffs in a while, but their leader has been in many playoff duels. Chris Paul is the best point guard in the league, but for the Clippers to win this game they will need someone else to step up down the stretch. Mo Williams could be a Jason Terry kind of player and help this team pull off the upset in 7 games.

The Los Angeles Clippers defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 4-3.

The Cincinnati Reds Lock Up Joey Votto Through 2023

The Reds are just two days away from Opening Day and Reds fans have another reason to be excited about the upcoming year. Cincinnati has made a few trades and free agent signings that excited the fan base that was disappointed in 2011 after the Reds won the Central Division in 2010. Former National League MVP Joey Votto was rumored in trades last season, simply because the Reds couldn't afford to pay him (or at least that's what most baseball insider's thought).

Well, Votto signed a 10-year $225 million extension on Tuesday with the Reds. Votto, signing the fourth largest contract in MLB history, will likely be a Red for the remainder of his career.

What does this mean for a small-market team committing so much money to one player? It means the Reds have their first baseman for the next decade. It makes the Mat Latos deal look better for the Reds, considering they gave up Yonder Alonzo, who was a top notch prospect who also played first base.

It also means that the face of the franchise may be gone after this season. Some know him as @datdudeBP if you follow him on twitter and others just call him "Phillips." Either way, Brandon Phillips is in the last year of his contract. He will be 31 years-old at the end of the season. I can't blame the Reds for locking up Votto, who is three-years younger and an MVP calibur talent. Brandon Phillips is an All-Star, but he is not an MVP.

It seemed as though the Reds were still going to invest money in Phillips and either trade, or let Votto walk. I believe many Reds fans wanted tried to convince themselves resigning Phillips was the best option. But, deep down, they knew letting Votto leave Cincinnati would be a mistake. Now, the Reds have struck a long-term deal with a player who could go down as one of the best to ever wear a Cincinnati uniform.

Joey Votto is only 28-years old. He is an above average defender and a player who’s more than capable of batting .320, while hitting 40 home runs and knocking in over 100 rbi’s every year. He is the best hitter in the National League and I don’t think many people will debate that.

Reds management knows what Votto brings to the table and that talent is untradeable. The Reds would never have received equal value for Votto and that is why the decision to keep him in Cincinnati is so crucial. He will produce year-in and year-out. It shows the fans, the community and the country that the Cincinnati Reds are all about winning and they are willing to spend money to win.
Cincinnati hasn’t had news like this since the Ken Griffey Jr. trade in 2000. The difference between the two is that Votto is still in his prime and doesn’t have the wear and tear that Griffey had when he came to Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Reds want to win and they believe that Joey Votto will be a major contributor and big part of the future of the success of the organization. If someone likes a house enough to buy it, they obviously think the house fits them. They may plan to have kids and watch them grow in that house. But if they know that it will be a highly competitive market, why not make an offer that is too good for the owners to pass up?

Cincinnati did that with Joey Votto. If the Reds truly believe Joey Votto can be an MVP-calibur player for years to come and the face of the Cincinnati Reds, then this deal is a no-brainer. They gave Votto an offer too good to pass up and now he will be able to lead the team for the next decade.

Time will tell on whether or not the investment will pay off. Regardless, it is obvious the Cincinnati Reds want to get back to their winning tradition.

Joey Votto's new contract is proof the Cincinnati Reds
want to win now, and in the future.

Bengals Look to the League's Elite for Franchise Consistency

The NFL offseason calls for teams to rebuild and reload. Every team goes back to the drawing board, regardless of the record from the year before.

The Cincinnati Bengals have had interesting and attention grabbing off-season’s in years past. The team always seemed to make a splash. Some of the offseason fireworks included the signing of Terrell Owens and Antonio Bryant.

Also, the trade demands of former Bengal players Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco come to mind. The attention wasn't always a positive and maybe the Bengals have learned that headline grabbing deals in free agency do not necessarily translate into wins.

In recent weeks, the Bengals have stayed pat and signed average players in free agency. They haven't gone out and signed a big name back up wide receiver to complement rookie sensation A.J. Green. They didn't go get the best offensive lineman or cornerback available.

Instead, they stayed pat and signed some mid-level players on defense and a slightly above average running back named Benjarvus Green Ellis. Green-Ellis nicknamed, "The Law Firm" is a high character guy, who played his first four seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots.

A lot of people in Cincinnati have criticized the Bengals for not becoming major players in free agency.

The common thought is that the Bengals have a lot of cap room and should use it. Well, who was the last team that had big free agent signings and won a Super Bowl? The Packers, Steelers and Patriots are legitimate Super Bowl contenders year in and year out, yet they don’t feel the need to make big moves in free agency. Those teams draft well and develop from within. Then, after the guys they draft are established; they reward their own players with good contracts.

The Bengals seem to be modeling themselves after some of the best franchises in all of sports. Although, I am not sure if I completely believe they will continue the trend of drafting well, like they have in recent years; I’m surely not going to criticize them for it.

Regardless of their history, the Bengals have made some great moves in the past year. In fact, many Cincinnati fans called last offseason the worst one in history, until they saw the product on the field. The team replaced Chad Ochocinco with the younger, more talented A.J. Green.

They replaced Carson Palmer, with Andy Dalton who proved in his first season that he was NFL worthy. Bengals owner Mike Brown traded the "retiring" Carson Palmer to the Oakland Raiders for a 1st round draft pick and a 2nd round draft pick.

Palmer wasn't even playing at the time! Mike Brown practically stole draft picks away from the Oakland Raiders.

The team went on to have a very successful season, winning 9 games and making the playoffs for just the third time in 22 seasons. This is no time to criticize Mr. Brown or Head Coach Marvin Lewis. The organization might be finally making the moves or not making the wrong moves that have doomed them in the past.

I am not saying the addition of free agents would hurt the team, but the path to a championship is having an organization that builds through the draft and develops its’ own players. Winning the headlines in March, does not help you win games in January.

There is a reason that the Bengals were able to sign Benjarvus Green-Ellis and take a weapon away from Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Cincinnati didn’t overpay for “The Law Firm,” who accepted a three-year, $9 million contract from the Bengals.

Green-Ellis doesn’t just have a cool nickname. He has plenty of talent left and he is only 26 years-old. He had to see something within this organization to accept a contract with the Bengals. Cincinnati is a team on the rise and this is the perfect time to model itself with the top-tier teams in the NFL.

Who knows, it may not work out. But, the Cincinnati Bengals have to become a perennial contender at some point. Maybe that time is closer than many think.

Could A.J. Green and the Bengals franchise be on their
way to becoming a perennial contender?
